Level up your fleet with Lightfoot

Fibrus is one of the fastest-growing broadband companies in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Founded in 2019, the company’s mission is to bring full-fibre broadband to digitally deprived and previously underserved areas, and Fibrus has already connected over 350,000 homes by building its own network in hard-to-reach locations.

In order to deliver this service, Fibrus operates a hard-working fleet, with installation managers, delivery managers, construction managers, fibre planners, engineers, and salespeople travelling to and from site and the surrounding local areas. The fleet has grown quickly alongside the business, and as it has developed and changed over time, so too have the needs of the fleet management team. As a result, the basic vehicle tracking system initially installed in Fibrus’s vehicles was no longer fit for purpose, and the team found themselves looking for a more sophisticated solution that could deliver the advanced functionality they required.

A positive change

Lightfoot was already on the Fibrus team’s radar due to our ongoing work with recognisable brands such as Tesco, Asda, and Virgin Media. To experience our driver coaching technology for themselves and discover if our comprehensive fleet management suite was the right fit, Fibrus tested out the Lightfoot system for several weeks through a free Lightfoot trial. The results were conclusive, and the trial removed any doubts that the team had about whether our cutting-edge tech was the solution they needed for better fleet management.

Now, thanks to the in-cab device’s real-time audio alerts and dashboard display, Fibrus drivers are adjusting their driving style to travel in a safer, smoother, and more sustainable way every day. This has led to a 9.2% uplift in average MPG across the fleet, which should see Fibrus save almost £20,000 annually on fuel. Risky manoeuvres and bad driving habits have dropped in number, with Fibrus seeing a fantastic 87% reduction in dangerous driving behaviour. And of course there are environmental benefits to more efficient driving too, with the fleet on track to prevent almost 50 tonnes of carbon emissions every year by driving with Lightfoot.

The difference in driving behaviour within the Fibrus fleet is also reflected across the weekly driving scores. Every week, drivers must aim for a score of 85% or higher to hit the Elite Driver target and become eligible to win cash prizes through the Lightfoot app’s exclusive competitions. By following Lightfoot’s in-cab guidance, the average weekly score for Fibrus’s drivers sits around 90%.

Managers have found that driver engagement through Lightfoot has been even better than expected, with plenty of healthy competition between colleagues and banter around the office over who has the higher score and which prizes have been won. It’s also helped to raise awareness within the Fibrus fleet, changing the mindset of drivers around how they handle their vehicles and making them more conscious of habits such as harsh braking and rapid acceleration.

For the team in charge, the Lightfoot fleet management portal has also delivered a string of benefits, providing a straightforward, easy to use platform with plenty of detailed data for fleet managers to dig into. A huge improvement over the basic telematics solution the Fibrus team were using previously, Lightfoot has greatly improved visibility and enhanced the team’s ability to fulfil duty of care obligations to drivers, whilst supplying important information and vital reporting features.

Looking to the future

Fibrus was created with sustainability at its core

As a forward-thinking, modern business, Fibrus was created with sustainability at its core, with a vision of providing the cleanest and greenest fibre communication network to its customers.

The company aims to achieve its net zero goals by 2040 and has committed to an all-electric fleet by as soon as 2025. Almost half of the current fleet is now made up of EVs, with staff provided with home charging points and on-site chargers at the office to ensure their vehicles can be charged up when they need to be.

Lightfoot has proved to be a million times better than our previous telematics solution

With such a strong focus on environmental impact, it was important for the fleet to work with a technology provider who could further their green credentials. Like many fleets, Fibrus has found that electrifying their LCVs is not as straightforward as onboarding electric company cars, and whilst they remain on track for their 2025 all-electric target, it helps to know in the meantime that their diesel vans are being driven as efficiently as possible with Lightfoot, leading to a lower carbon footprint.

Of course, Lightfoot also helps to deliver great savings in electric vehicles, with Fibrus’s drivers able to extend the range of their EVs by travelling in a more considerate way. This means that even when the fleet is fully electric, they’ll still be able to reap the rewards of smoother, safer driving.

We asked Sharon McGregor, Fleet, Facilities, & Office Manager at Fibrus, what her thoughts are on using Lightfoot within the fleet – here’s what she had to say:

Lightfoot has proved to be a million times better than our previous telematics solution, and that’s been backed up by the support we receive from the team too. The account management team in particular have been really quick to respond to and resolve any queries – they’re there at the drop of a hat if we need them. That’s certainly given us a lot of confidence, as it’s not always the experience we’ve had with fleet systems providers.

The product itself is a great asset for our team, as we’re able to see the exact information we need right when we need it, and it’s made reporting so much easier. Being able to see the savings month on month, it’s really quite impressive. And you know, we’ve had to stay in the contract with our original provider despite no longer using their technology, but even running Lightfoot alongside, with the savings we’re seeing now that our drivers are handling their vehicles more economically, it’s still cost-effective to do so. That’s a real testament to the difference it’s made across our fleet.”
