Fuse Rail are a specialist company working within the rail industry to deliver mechanical, electrical, and construction services. The small van fleet consists of engineers travelling from the company’s head office to remote locations across the map, where projects can range from the installation of new rail equipment to diagnosing and repairing existing lines. The job sees fleet drivers move from site to site, often in rural areas, so there’s a big emphasis on vehicle tracking and driver safety when it comes to managing the Fuse Rail workforce.
With such complex needs, the company found that they were struggling to get the insights they required from basic telematics technology. The system they were initially using left them with a highly manual setup, with several days a month being spent on admin just to extract the data the team needed to effectively manage the fleet and prioritise their workers’ safety.
It was time for a change, and Fuse Rail began trialling advanced fleet solutions to find the technology that would best suit the business’s growing requirements
An unbelievable difference
Amongst the fleet systems that Fuse Rail tested was Lightfoot’s award-winning driver coaching solution. Not only does our in-cab device help to improve driver safety by teaching drivers how to handle their vehicle in a more efficient way whilst unlearning dangerous driving habits, but our comprehensive fleet management portal also provides all the data and reports that managers need to make informed decisions and simplify operations. It’s a one-stop shop solution, which was exactly what the Fuse Rail team were looking for.
Our trial data showed that the rail equipment specialists could make average MPG improvements of 8.7% across the fleet, with a comparable reduction in CO2 emissions, equating to a 13-tonne annual drop in their fleet’s carbon footprint.
These carbon savings are especially important to Fuse Rail as they set their sights on being a net zero company within the next 5 years. Currently, any plans to transition the fleet to EVs are hindered by the lack of suitable van models. With most projects occurring in rural locations along the railways of Southeast England, there simply isn’t the infrastructure in place yet to meet the charging requirements of heavily-laden electric vans. This means Fuse Rail’s workforce will likely be in diesel vans for a while longer, and so reducing the emissions output by almost 10% just by introducing smoother driving habits is a huge win for the company.
Within the Lightfoot Portal, the insights into speeding incidents, the vehicle tracking functionality, and the automated reporting also proved invaluable for Fuse Rail, and it wasn’t long before every van was fitted with a Lightfoot device.
Now with Lightfoot in place as their sole telematics provider, the fleet is saving an incredible £10,000 a year on fuel on average, significantly minimising its environmental impact, and seeing a huge improvement in driver safety.
Lasting improvements
One of the biggest surprises for the Fuse Rail team following the rollout of Lightfoot was how quickly their drivers adapted to the new tech. In fact, whilst the Elite Driver weekly target is set at 85% for all Lightfoot drivers, Fuse Rail’s average score barely dips below 90%, with many of the company’s drivers scoring as high as 97% every week.
It’s a great example of how gamifying and rewarding better driving behaviour can lead to long-term improvements and is a testament to how seriously the Fuse Rail fleet values road safety.
Mark Luddington, SHEQ Manager at Fuse Rail, was heavily involved in introducing Lightfoot into the fleet. Here’s what he had to say about the decision to use our game-changing technology:
“We’ve always been proactive on safety – the nature of our work is that we’ll often send say, two people out to a job in the middle of nowhere for a few hours, so protecting our people is really important to us. Our people are our highest priority. And we knew we were lacking something in the fleet with our previous telematics software.
The safety aspect was one of the main advantages of Lightfoot for us. As long as we can monitor speeding, track our vehicles’ locations, we’re happy. And honestly we thought the reductions in our emissions and our fuel usage sounded too good to be true. But wow – the reduction in fuel costs has been unbelievable, and the carbon savings are hugely, hugely important to us. Lightfoot has really changed things for the Fuse Rail fleet, I couldn’t recommend it enough.”

Results that matter
By levelling up their fleet management platform and opting for Lightfoot’s industry-leading driver coaching technology, Fuse Rail are reaping the benefits across the key areas of their fleet. Driver safety, the number one priority within the fleet, has been bolstered by providing drivers with real-time feedback as they travel, ensuring that habits such as rapid acceleration, harsh braking, speeding, and sharp cornering are significantly reduced. This has also resulted in fantastic savings for the business with regards to fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and we look forward to helping the Fuse Rail team get even more value from our all-in-one solution as this partnership progresses.
