SES water case study

SES Water supplies 160 million litres of fresh water to over 750,000 customers every day, covering parts of Surrey, Kent, and South London. This includes maintaining over 2000 miles of water mains, 8 treatment works, 23 pumping stations, and 31 operational service reservoirs and water towers.

With this in mind, it’s no wonder that the fleet is an integral part of SES Water’s operations, with operatives travelling across the south of England to ensure a safe and reliable supply of drinking water is always available to the many homes and businesses the company provides for.

The SES Water fleet is comprised of approximately 120 LCVs, of which 25% are now electric. The company has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030, and plans to make the fleet fully EV, PHEV, or alternatively fuelled before this date. With a track record as an innovator within the utilities industry, it was therefore key that SES Water found a fleet technology partner who could match their reputation for being both innovative and sustainability-driven.

Golden safety standards

technical innovation

One of the biggest motivators behind SES Water sourcing a new fleet telematics and management solution was to support the fleet with driver safety and reducing risk.

In trialling the Lightfoot system, SES Water’s vans were fitted with our in-cab driver coaching devices. These were then activated in the blind phase of the trial to record driving data and evaluate the standards of driving across the fleet, before being fully switched on for the live phase. For several weeks, SES Water drivers then received real-time training, with the light-up display and audio alerts guiding them towards a smoother, safer style of driving, where bad habits such as rapid acceleration, harsh braking, excessive speeding, and sharp cornering were slowly phased out. The results were undeniably positive, with a 100% reduction in dangerous driving experienced throughout the fleet.

The free trial of Lightfoot also showed a 15.1% uplift in MPG, the equivalent savings in carbon emissions, and a 9% drop in engine idling. It wasn’t long until our industry-leading technology was rolled out to the entire SES Water fleet, and there’s been no looking back for the utilities company. Today, these savings amount to over £95,000 in fuel bill reductions, and a total of 229 tonnes of CO2 prevented from being released into the atmosphere by the fleet’s remaining petrol and diesel vehicles.

SES Water’s successes don’t stop there. Driving behaviour is now greatly improved in the fleet, with many drivers finding that Lightfoot’s in-cab coaching has even changed the way they travel in their own personal vehicles. The adoption of Lightfoot also played a significant role in SES Water winning a Gold Award at the RoSPA Fleet Safety Awards, which recognise fleets that effectively identify and manage road risk.

Greener roads ahead

Streamline your fleet strategy with Lightfoot

Lightfoot has also been pivotal in the SES Water fleet’s transition to electric vehicles.

Not only have the improvements in driving style led to significant sustainability milestones within the ICE fleet – with the carbon emissions savings having the same environmental impact as converting 52 fleet vehicles to EVs – but by handling their vans in a gentler way, SES Water’s drivers are also seeing a marked improvement in the fleet’s electric vehicle performance. With a more considered approach to driving and fewer energy-hungry manoeuvres, drivers are able to extend the range of their EVs and stop for fewer charges, with the energy saved across the fleet equating to the amount used for over 8000 typical EV charges.

By recording driver behaviour and vehicle use data, Lightfoot is also able to provide valuable insights into which fleet vehicles are most suitable for electrification, further helping SES Water to reach their net zero goals by progressing them towards a fully electric fleet.

Commenting on the fleet’s journey so far with Lightfoot, here’s what Allan Jones, Fleet Manager at SES Water, had to say:

“I've always found Lightfoot really, really easy to speak to. I have a dedicated account manager, and they're very responsive to anything that we need as an organisation. Moving into electric vehicles, we've had some subtle changes and we've been doing some development with Lightfoot and they've been very responsive to that as well.

If you're looking for a telematics device to support your fleet operations, to help you reduce CO2, to keep your drivers safe, and work with a company that is collaborative, innovative, and there to support you each day, I would definitely recommend Lightfoot.
